Stopping Fake Certificates and Transcripts – Is Digital and Blockchain Technology the Answer?

The problem of fake academic certificates and transcripts is neither new nor rare. Across Singapore and the broader Asia-Pacific region, fraudulent credentials surface regularly in hiring processes, professional licensing applications, and university admissions — causing direct harm to employers, institutions, and legitimate graduates.

What has changed is the scale and sophistication of the problem. Digital document editing tools have made convincing forgeries accessible to anyone, while the global mobility of the workforce means that verifying credentials from overseas institutions has become genuinely difficult.

The question is whether digital verification and blockchain technology — increasingly proposed as solutions — can actually solve the problem at scale, and what practical steps institutions should take now rather than waiting for technology to catch up.
